How To Practice Turf Lawn Care For Optimum Results

Turf lawn care can be relatively quick and easy, because in choosing to lay turf you have already eliminated the chance of weeds growing in amongst new grass seed. Turf may be more expensive than seed, but it has several distinct advantages. Firstly, it gives you an instant even surface provided the soil has been properly leveled before you start. Secondly, it saves you an enormous amount of time, and thirdly, it is easier to maintain. Choosing turf can also give you near instant results.

Creating a flat surface is the first essential in making turf work for you. In most cases, you will be able to achieve this effect by simply walking on the soil. If the surface is more uneven, you may even have to use a roller. In extreme cases where the soil is incredibly uneven, you can always add another layer of topsoil, adding more in the areas where there are dips and less where there are peaks. Whichever way you achieve the result, the flat surface is absolutely essential if you are going to get the best result from turf.

When you lay the turf on the flat surface, it is best to lay out the joint as you would with brickwork, with a staggering system. Try to avoid walking on the turf if you can. Use a sharp knife to take off any uneven edges, and make sure the joints are smooth. You then need to allow a few weeks for the grass to establish itself and appear natural. The most important aspect of lawn turf care is now to ensure you water the turf regularly. This applies whatever the weather, but obviously if you are laying turf in a hot summer, you will need an even greater quantity of water.

One of the most useful tips for lawn turf care is to use a fertilizer before you begin to lay the turf. If this is applied evenly, and the grass given time to settle and grow, it will result in your lawn having a richer color and smoother texture. A simple general purpose fertilizer will be good enough for this job. If you don't want to use a proprietary commercial fertilizer containing chemicals, there is always the option of using compost.

The final important turf lawn care tip is to make sure you don't do any serious damage while you are mowing the lawn. Leave mowing altogether until the grass has grown to at least three centimeters in height, and when you do begin mowing make sure that you never take off more than a third of the length of the grass. Taking off more than this can lead to discoloration, and should this happen in high summer the results are likely to be extreme. Follow these basic principles, and you can achieve a great looking lawn easily with good turf lawn care.
