Lawn lime can make a huge difference to the quality of your lawn, but only in the right circumstances. It is not a cure-all, and in some cases may even do your lawn more harm than good. As ever, it is important to see the treatment as part of an overall plan to achieve the highest possible quality of color and smoothness with your grass, rather than seeing it as a one off treatment. The best results will always come from being prepared to do the right diagnostic work before you even think about applying a treatment to your lawn.

The first consideration is whether or not you believe that acidic soil is causing problems in your garden. It is the soil that lawn lime actually treats, rather than the grass. If the soil is acidic, the grass will suffer as a consequence, and all of the effort you put in to produce the best grass you can will be thwarted. This test will very quickly show whether or not there is a problem in your case. Even if the tests are positive, you still need to be careful as to how and when you use lime. The second best time is in the spring, just before the new growth starts to appear. Using lawn lime in the summer when the grass has reached peak growth is not recommended, as it can burn grass when it used at that time. If you do use it in peak season, make sure you use it sparingly, and give your lawn plenty of water.
